As I wrote in my welcome message. The History of Transportation is a fascinating tale of how men and women have moved about within their world, What is possible for transportation changes over time. For example without sailing ships of the quality evolved by the Portuguese for exploring the African Coast, Columbus could not have discovered America, and Europeans could not have settled in the New World. Without the steamboats and railways made possible by the invention of an efficient steam engine by James Watt, America's westward expansion would have been much more difficult. Without airplanes and super cargo container ships the global world we live in today could not exist.
From the first log roller (wheel) to the diesel locomotive and the sports car, from the first coracle to navigate pre-historic British waters to the Queen Elizabeth II, and from the Wright Brothers to the Concorde or the Space Shuttle what men knew about their world, and what it was possible for them to dream or do has always depended in many cases upon transportation technology. Before the first telegraph, the telephone, or the internet, written communication could only travel as fast as the horse or ship carrying it. An understanding of the History of Transportation can greatly increase and enrich a person's understanding of all of History.
But, even more importantly the History of Transportation is fun! I hope you will read and enjoy my articles and blogs. This is a new page, so come back and visit regularly. There will be new posts every week on Wednesday.
