I think I'd have to say that the most useful transportation technology of all time would have to be the wheel. Without the wheel, after all, there would not likely be very many forms of mechanical transportation!

Interesting point. The wheel is obviously a part of cars and trains, and in an eveloved form as a propellor is integral to ships without sail, and some airplanes. Very good point.
